Special Preview Screening of 'LEE' – A Tribute to Lee Miller

I was truly honoured to be invited to a special preview screening of the film "LEE" at Lewes Depot, generously hosted by our friends at Farleys House & Gallery and made possible with the kind permission of Sky. This remarkable film stars Kate Winslet as Lee Miller, the pioneering war photographer and correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II.

The film draws its narrative from the 1985 biography "The Lives of Lee Miller," authored by her son, Antony Penrose. Lee Miller led an extraordinary life, and this cinematic portrayal focuses on a pivotal period when she worked in Europe as a war correspondent. Her photographs, which document the harrowing realities of war, hold immense historical significance, providing a window into the atrocities faced during that time.

Directed by Ellen Kuras, "LEE" stands out from other war films I have encountered. It’s a story about a woman, crafted by women, and this perspective adds a unique depth to the narrative. Kate Winslet delivers a powerful performance, embodying Miller’s strength and resilience. The attention to detail in both casting and set design elevates the film; witnessing Lee's iconic photographs come to life, with her Rolleiflex camera, was a truly special experience.

Following the screening, we were treated to a Q&A session featuring Antony Penrose and Ami Bouhassane. They shared insightful anecdotes about Lee Miller's life, the long journey involved in bringing this film to fruition, and the establishment of the Lee Miller Archives at Farleys Farmhouse, the historic home of Lee Miller and her partner, Roland Penrose, located in the beautiful Sussex countryside.

"LEE" will be released in cinemas on 13 September, and I highly encourage everyone to see it. This film not only celebrates the life of an extraordinary woman but also sheds light on the critical role of female voices in the narrative of history. It's a poignant reminder of the importance of storytelling and the impact of visual documentation, particularly in understanding the complexities of war.

As we look forward to the film's official release, let's support stories like Lee Miller’s that highlight the contributions of women in history, especially in fields often dominated by men. This film is not just a historical account; it’s a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the power of perspective. Don't miss your chance to witness this captivating tribute to a remarkable life.

Why "LEE" Matters

"LEE" is more than just a film; it's a crucial addition to the conversation about female representation in media. With its focus on a woman's journey through war, the film provides a fresh lens through which to view history. As it portrays the realities of World War II, it also emphasizes the significance of women’s contributions to journalism and photography, inspiring future generations to seek out their own paths in creative and impactful fields.

Final Thoughts

Mark your calendars for 13 September and prepare for an unforgettable cinematic experience. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on "LEE" and discussing the powerful legacy of Lee Miller. Let's celebrate this important film together.
